PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION |
This is a 9 week summer
program in solid state chemistry research for undergraduates
and college faculty, under the direction of a recognized authority
in the field.
- Participants receive a stipend plus a housing supplement and travel
expenses, paid by the NSF program.
- The
program starts with tutorial sessions at the University of Oregon (6/13–6/19). (View the 2009 tutorial agenda.)
- Participants next
travel to a university or industrial laboratory of their choice
for a eight-week research program (see link to host labs at left).
- The program reconvenes at
Oregon State University for a final symposium (8/13–8/14)
before the trip home. (View 2009 symposium schedule)
- Participating faculty will have the choice of either laboratory
research or a university program directed toward the development
of lecture materials on solid state chemistry suitable for inclusion
in undergraduate course work.

|
ELIGIBILITY |
- College students and
faculty of domestic institutions, who are US citizens or permanent
residents, are eligible to apply.
- Priority will be given to undergraduate
students who are rising seniors and to faculty members who are
engaged in course development in chemistry or physics.
- Special
consideration will be given to individuals from institutions
where an advanced research program in solid state chemistry is
unavailable.
- Faculty applicants are encouraged to apply jointly
with an undergraduate student from the same institution.
- While
preference will be given to first time applicants, repeat participation
is possible for faculty members for a continuation of curriculum
development.
